Mis-sold a Personal Pension
Mis-selling occurred between 1988 and 1994 when people who would have been better off in their employer’s pension scheme were advised either to leave or not to join their employer’s scheme or when they transferred pension benefits from a previous employer’s scheme and took out a personal pension plan instead.
The opportunity for people to leave the Second State Pension Scheme, and its predecessor Serps, was a flagship policy of the Conservative government which wanted to encourage private pension saving. The entire policy of encouraging people to leave the Second State Pension Scheme is now widely regarded as a mistake. In August 2005 the FSA itself warned that "contracted-out" savers were likely to receive £4 a week less in pension than someone who had never opted out.
